We are all looking for answers. All of us. Without exception. We see the world that we live in, the world in which we were all born and can’t help but think “What’s the point?” If we only knew more we could answer that question. If we only knew The Truth, we would know “The Point”.
Outside of our blue planet the physical universe is hostile to life. Even within our blue planet most areas are inhabitable to mankind. We begin to teach our children from the moment they are born how to survive in a world governed by the laws of Physics that will crush anyone who denies, ignores or is unaware of their characteristics. We are teaching our children Physics from “day one” without any formal education on the subject ourselves. Even before Galileo, Newton and Einstein (each upon the work of the former) refined our understanding of the Law of Gravitation, humans knew if you walked off a cliff you would fall to the ground below.
Then look at the way humans treat humans! We are more appalled at the pointless brutality and injustice of men against men than we are the effects of natural laws because the universe does not have a choice. Why does man’s mistreatment of man bother us? How do we know one type of behavior right and another wrong? By what standard do we measure? The big question is this: how do we know we are right?
How do you know you are right?
The method employed to answer this question is different for the physical universe than it is for morality. In Physics it is the Scientific Method, to which there are four steps.
1) Observation for data gathering
2) Hypothesis formulation
4) Observation for corroboration
The fourth and final step is how Physicists determine whether or not the first three steps are right.
An excellent and famous example of the 4th step’s application occurred around 1590, when Galileo decided to apply the fourth step to Aristotle’s “Law of Falling Bodies”. It was believed by all legitimate and respected scientists of Galileo’s time, and those of the previous 2000 years, that heavy objects fall faster than light objects –the rate of fall being proportional to the weight of the object. Galileo had the audacity to test this belief via the 4th step from the leaning side of the tower at Pisa. He dropped a cannonball and a light shot with most of the faculty and students of the university in which he was a professor as witnesses.
Both landed at the same time.
Was Galileo applauded, honored and awarded for breaking the 2000 year catalepsy of scientific thought?
Galileo was rewarded with the loss of his professorship and lifelong harassment by the very university faculty members who themselves witnessed the testing and failure of Aristotle’s hypothesis! They saw it, but since it violated 2000 years of established thought refused to believe and accept the proof in plain sight! The fallibility of Aristotle was unthinkable! They had built their own professional reputations and lives on not questioning the status quo! If Aristotle could be wrong, then so could they! They would lose their societal status as The Disseminators of Truth, The High Priests of Knowledge, The Anointed Holy Seers of truth!
Galileo must be stopped!
Sound familiar? Do you see the parallels? Jesus and the Pharisees! Yes! But more specific to this event: these were the Pharisees of science. Unfortunately this is not an unusual event in the history of scientific thought. Today is no different. Anyone who tells the truth is a target. Anyone who questions or points out the flaws in an accepted scientific thought on which reputations, power, money and control is at stake is met with emotional wrath -the level of rage directly proportional to the inaccuracy of the hypothesis in question. We see this emotional frenzy from the Macro Evolutionists who also refuse to believe and accept the proof in plain sight clearly demonstrated by Intelligent Design. To be fair, some of them have not seen the evidence provided… because they close their eyes!
It’s interesting to note that most people know Galileo was harassed and threatened by the Catholic Church, but don’t know he was also harassed by the scientists of his time with greater zeal and for the same reasons. So the next time you think that science is beyond fear and bigotry –take a look at history.
How do you know you are right? By following the evidence where it leads. That is what Galileo did. It took bravery and intellectual honesty. That is the way to Absolute Truth and the answer to the question “What is the point?”
Apologist Greg Koukl says “You can’t weigh a chicken with a yardstick!” Similarly you can’t measure Moral Right and Wrong by use of the Scientific Method. It’s the wrong tool!
How do you know you are right when it comes to morality?
