Becoming a Christian is a real fear for some. It was for me. It’s as if they are in danger of being replaced against their will with a stand-in, transformed into a Zombie for Christ! Notice how they squirm, move away and sometimes become hostile when you speak about Jesus? They are embarrassed for you and afraid for themselves! Why do people fear the Christian Body Snatchers?
A Few Objections Freely Expressed
“I don’t want to…
– abdicate reason and give up thinking for myself”
– be a narrow minded, bigoted, judgemental hypocrite”
– base my entire life on faith”
– be fooled or tricked”
– be told what to do or how to think”
– Lose my individuality”
– lose my autonomy”
– lose my mind”
A Few Objections NOT Freely Expressed or Admitted
“I don’t want to…
– give up the fun of doing whatever I want whenever I want”
– answer to anyone, especially an ultimate authority”
– change what I am doing”
– be disciplined”
– live life for something other than myself”
– see myself how I really am”
– be unable to hide from a God who sees me all the time”
– discover Christianity is really true, because then I would no longer have ignorance as an excuse to deny it”
Already Zombies
What the non-Christians fail to see is that they themselves are guilty of that first list of objections! They are already Zombies blindly following a worldview planted in their minds by others for which they are the host! If you don’t know what you believe and why you believe it, you are a Zombie! You are a second hand person being used by others to promote their agenda!
How do people become Zombies? By swallowing hook, line and sinker whatever they have been told by the “authorities” in their lives: society, media, parents, teachers, professors and “religious” leaders.
More importantly: why do people remain Zombies? Because it’s easier. Inertia. We are all prone to this. None of us wants to make the effort or take the risk of honestly questioning, assessing and analyzing that which we have based our entire lives. Why rock the boat? Why upset the apple cart?
Few are willing to “Follow the Evidence Where it Leads.”
If you as a Christian haven’t taken a look at what you believe and why you believe it, you are no better than the non-Christians. You’re just lucky. You are forgiven, yes, but so might they be -if they only knew what you take for granted.
Learning to articulate what your heart knows to be true is the key to unlocking that knowledge for others.
Don’t tell them that it’s true; tell them why it’s true. If you don’t know why, find out! Start with these three books: “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist”, “Cold Case Christianity” and “Mere Christianity”. We reach out to them by building an Apologetics bridge, and when they cross that bridge they too can be “lucky”, and set free.
From the real Body Snatchers.
