I think that thinking is important.
I see that thinking is important.
Because if we aren’t thinking, someone else is doing it for us.
Yet, what does it look like to do our own thinking? What is meant by that?
At a minimum It means accepting no conclusion without seeing the premises on which the conclusion was derived.
It’s like saying “Show me the money!”
Show Me the Premises!
Ignorance of logical, rational thinking is a prescription for disaster.
Ignorance of how we know what we know is a universal problem for all men. It is the universal problem.
Now, Some would say separation from God is our universal problem, and they’re right. But that separation is due precisely to imprecise thinking!
And since the heart follows the mind both stumble into the abyss of darkness if we don’t have our head on straight.
Our Most Powerful Tool
Once one learns how to think, and to use the most powerful defensive and offensive tool given to mankind, then the road to answering all questions that can be known is wide open.
I’m not saying that right thinking makes us like God.
Because right thinking leads to humility and the right conclusion that we aren’t God!
It also leads to the right conclusion that there is a God. And once followed to its logical end, that Jesus Christ is God.
Logic is the road that leads us to our Savior. It doesn’t lead us to arrogant, self-reliant independence from God or the eternally catastrophic error that a Savior is unnecessary.
Betrayal of Circular Reasoning
But logic without intellectual honesty, without a heart that yearns for the truth, will betray itself by elevating itself to a status of infallibility. Which is merely a form of circular reasoning, where one looks in the mirror and tells himself that he is right because the person in the mirror says so.
So where am I going with all this at 7:35 am Saturday morning?
It’s this: we don’t need anyone else to tell us what to think.
Think About It!
Stated another way: no one is so smart that we can’t understand how they derive their conclusions because we aren’t as smart as they are. As if they have an inside track on truth. On thinking.
Show it to me! Show me how you came to the conclusions you espouse! Clearly and succinctly! One step at a time. Build your case.
Show me the premises!
