The mind doesn’t always know why the heart has joy. It comes out of its reverie, looks over and says to the heart “Why are you smiling? What is that song you are singing?”
The heart replies, “Oh! I don’t know, I wasn’t thinking about it! If I do, the joy fades, then runs away.”
The mind looks down at his feet, wiggles his toes and says, “Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt. I can’t help myself. You are an enigma to me: unfathomable and fascinating! You have an elusive logic of your own.”
“That’s okay!” Responds the heart, then continues. “The same for me with you! But hey, why don’t we work together on this? I feel we can help each other! Here, take this smile and put it on!”
“No! It’s awkward, uncomfortable, out of place, doesn’t belong…” Replies the mind, frantically fumbling to remove it from his face.
“Oh, but it does!” The heart retorts. “I remember now the reason for my joy –you gave it to me!”
“Huh?! I don’t give reasons for joy!” The mind counters, eyes narrowing.
The heart reaches over, gently touches the mind.
“Sometimes I worry,” explains the heart, “but whenever I come to you with my doubts, and ask, for instance, ‘Is it really true? Was Jesus the Messiah, who gives us the gift of eternal life when we put our trust in Him?’, you kindly assure me that the longer and the deeper you investigate the evidence the more convincing it is!”
The heart pauses a moment, searching for the right words, then concludes.
“You gave me this smile! But it belongs to us both!”
Stunned, the mind searches to harmonize the discrepancy. His eyes quickly dart from thought to thought, then slowly widen.
“It’s true!” He finally reveals. “Your concerns and doubts do motivate me to learn more, and now your joy. Where would I be without that? Wandering, purposeless and uninspired! We do make a good team! Thank-you for reminding me there is a reason for joy! I’ll take that smile!”
